Dianna Kompanowski (née Birr), age 81, beloved wife of Daniel for 58 years, passed away surrounded by love. She was a devoted mother to Paula (Mike) Cilia, Laura (Mike) LaCombe, Damen Kompanowski, and Kevin Kompanowski. Dianna was a cherished grandmother to Nicholas (Lindsay) Cilia, Olivia Cilia, Michael Cilia, Matt LaCombe, and George LaCombe.
She is also survived by her beloved brother, Harvey Birr Jr., as well as her sisters-in-law, Kathy Birr, and her brother -in-law, Robert (Cathy) Kompanowski. Dianna was a devoted aunt to Janine, Colette, Kristine, Darren (Dawn), Amanda (Jim), Caitlin, and Kelly (Andy). She will be remembered as a cherished cousin and friend to many.
Dianna Kompanowski, born on July 29, 1943, in Chicago, grew up surrounded by the vibrant energy of the city. She met her husband, Daniel Kompanowski, in the early 1960s, and they were married on August 13, 1966. They settled in the suburbs, making their home on Victoria Lane in Wood Dale, a neighborhood filled with warmth and community spirit, where neighbors became like family. This was the place where Dianna's life truly flourished, and where she nurtured her family.
Known affectionately as Mrs. Kampo, Dianna's home became a beloved gathering spot for children in the neighborhood. Friday nights were particularly special, filled with pizza, adventures to putt-putt, Kiddie Kingdom, ice cream outings, and evenings at Buckingham Fountain. The kids would eagerly pile into the back of the suburban, creating countless joyful memories.
Family was at the heart of Dianna's life. She prioritized shared dinners, ensuring that even if someone couldn’t make it home, a plate awaited them in the oven. The kitchen was the hub of activity, serving not only as a place for meals but also for homework, creative projects, and games. Dianna was a remarkable cook, allowing each child to choose their favorite meal and cake for their birthdays, and her culinary skills spanned Italian, Polish, Mexican, German and even Chinese cuisine.
Dianna cherished family trips, which created some of her most treasured memories. Destinations included the Lake of the Ozarks, Disney, camping adventures, Michigan City, Lake Geneva, and the breathtaking mountains of Colorado, where she experienced the thrill of dog sledding.
As her children grew and began to forge their own paths, Dianna and Dan embraced new adventures together, traveling extensively with friends Den and Aud, exploring Europe, Italy, China, even enjoying a hot air balloon ride in Albuquerque. However, nothing brought them more joy than visiting their grandchildren. These trips were filled with late-night card games, spirited wrestling matches with Grandma, her culinary skills on full display as a short-order cook, and cheering on her grandkids at baseball, football, field hockey, diving, and lacrosse games. Dianna was their biggest supporter, always finding a way to watch their games on her iPad if she couldn’t be there in person.
Dianna lived a rich and fulfilling life, surrounded by the love of family and friends. Her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of the Kompanowski, Cilia, and LaCombe families. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 20th from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, and on Tuesday, January 21st from 8:00 AM until 9:30 AM at The Oaks Funeral Home, located at 1201 E Irving Park Road (at Prospect), Itasca.
